We All Have Secrets
This portrait is one of three I created of Harriet Tubman, representing different chapters of her life as a free person: Minty –shortly after her emancipation, The Conductor –during her midlife, and The General – in her later years. It reflects the heart of my artistic practice: uncovering and reinterpreting chronicles from the past through visual storytelling. To deepen my own understanding of why I am drawn to these images from the past, I explored the existing chronicles documenting the Underground Railroad movement and felt intensely captivated by the bravery of those who risked everything for freedom. Harriet Tubman, in particular, stood out as a symbol of extraordinary courage and resistance for me. Her story inspired the use of gold leaf in this piece to create patterns based on the silhouettes of the shackles once used to imprison enslaved people in North America. By reimagining a painful artifact from the past as one of resilience and remembrance, I aim to honor Tubman’s legacy while prompting reflection on the lasting impact of slavery.
This approach intends to expand on this concept of legacy reclamation. I will continue to scaffold the concepts of Dámelotuyo through a new series that reinterprets artifacts associated with bondage as emblems of strength, perseverance, and cultural memory.
