A painting of Narges Mohammadi encased in sheets of copperleaf.

Hush

This portrait honors Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Prize laureate and a tireless proponent for indiscriminate objectivity and human rights. Inspired by a reference image I saw of her from a court hearing following her imprisonment, I sought to capture the piercing gaze that reflects the weight of injustice. The emotion in her eyes was profoundly moving and it was a reminder to me of the urgent need to shed light on the injustices that are too often ignored. I depicted her outline with restraint, allowing only the eyes to hold center stage, and then I encased her figure in the thin layers of copper leaf sheets, representing both her confinement and resilience.
