Painting a contemporary portrait of my great grandmother, someone I never had the pleasure of meeting in person but have heard we share similar personality traits and interests, was my way of honoring her memory. After sifting through old family photos, I came across an image of her with her stern yet wise-looking face, and I knew it was the perfect image for a painting. Choosing to only use shades and values of red hues as well as delicate gold flowers, I created an homage not just to her physical likeness but also to the legacy she has left behind which has clearly been carried onto me in some way.
